How to identify oxidation?
Identifying Oxidation
  • Dull or Faded Paint:
The paint looks dull, chalky, or faded, losing its original shine. This is a clear sign of oxidation.
  • Chalky Residue:
When you run your hand over the surface, you might notice a white, chalky residue. If this mixes with rain, it can create a white liquid streaking down the sides of your RV.
  • Surface Roughness:
The surface feels rough or gritty, indicating that the protective paint layer is breaking down.

Regular washing protects your RV's gelcoat, slowing down discoloration and oxidation. Learn more below!

Why wash fiberglass regularly?

Washing prevents discoloration.

Bugs, salt, and dirt (Red Dust) slowly deteriorate the protective gelcoat layer that protects your caravan or motorhome from environmental damages. It is essential to remove these harsh elements to prolong the lust of your home on wheels.

BUGS secrete organic acids (uric acid and formic acid) that slowly corrode and weaken the gelcoat layer protecting fiberglass. This deterioration exposes the fiberglass to Australia’s harsh UV rays, leading to discoloration and damage over time.

SALT accelerates gelcoat deterioration by drawing excess moisture from the air. This moisture promotes a chemical reaction (hygroscopic absorption), leading to increased mold growth. Mold weakens the gelcoat further by forming small cracks, which expose the underlying fiberglass to Australia's harsh UV rays, resulting in discoloration and damage over time.

DIRT (Red Dust) also significantly deteriorates gelcoat. Australia's outback red dust is more then just dirt; it's highly abrasive and can embed into the gelcoat of your motorhome or caravan. Left untreated, this dust grinds against the surface, corroding the gelcoat and exposing the fiberglass to environmental damage.

In conclusion, regularly washing your fiberglass to remove harmful chemicals like salt, bugs, and dust is crucial for preserving its integrity. This maintenance is even more essential than applying protective coatings like Ceramic Coating, as these coatings also suffer from the same deteriorating effects if left unchecked.

.

Ceramic Safe Wash (SiO2 Benefits)

Our wash doesn't just remove these harmful elements, it also applies a hydrophobic layer (SiO2) that help deflect these elements from settling on the gelcoat surface in the first place.

How often should I wash my RV?

More Often = Prolonged Results

The more often you wash, the longer your gelcoat and protective coatings will last. For most owners, washing every 2-4 weeks is ideal, depending on how frequently you use your RV.

Here’s a general guide for different types of RV owners:

Frequent Travelers (Regular Trips or Full-Time Travelers):

  • Before & After Each Trip: This ensures that any road grime, bugs, or salt picked up during travel doesn’t settle on the surface for too long.
  • Every 2 weeks during extended trips or frequent use.

Seasonal Travelers (Before Storage & Before Travel):

  • Before storage: Thoroughly wash your RV before putting it away for extended periods to remove contaminants that could degrade the surface over time.
  • Every 1-2 months while in storage, especially if it’s outdoors, to prevent dust, dirt, and environmental damage from accumulating.

Addition Notes

  • Storage Conditions: RVs stored outdoors may need more frequent washes to prevent damage from salt, tree sap, or bird droppings.
  • Weather Impact: After heavy rain or storms, check your RV for debris and clean it to avoid surface wear.
  • Protective Covers: Washing before covering helps avoid dirt build-up over time, even if stored under a cover.

In conclusion, the more you wash your RV, the better protected it stays. Regular cleaning prevents damage, maintains shine, and extends the life of any protective coatings.

Additional Questions

Why is it called Ceramic-Safe Wash?

Originally designed to safely clean motorhomes after ceramic coating, Ceramic Safe Wash was formulated to protect the coating without stripping it. Now enhanced with SiO2, it offers additional ceramic protection while remaining versatile for all surfaces. We kept the name because it reflects both its origins and the added benefits of the new formula.

How to protect even further post wash?

To enhance protection after washing, applying a product like Hydro Wax is a great option. It’s safe to use and boosts your RV's hydrophobic properties, helping to repel water and contaminants more effectively. Plus, it increases the gloss, giving your motorhome a deeper shine and ensuring long-lasting results between washes.

Can I use bore or hard water?

Yes, it is safe to use with bore or hard water.

Maintenance between washing

As an additional suggestion, hosing off any dust or debris between washes can be advantageous for those looking to maintain their RV to the highest standard. While this practice may seem a bit extreme and isn’t necessary, it has multiple benefits. By quickly removing debris, you’ll make your next wash easier and prevent buildup that can be harder to remove over time.
